The only thing better than a good recipe? When something’s so easy to make that you almost don’t even need one. Today on “It’s That Easy!” we’re making a new fave: Korean Fire Noodles.
Satisfying, unfussy meals. What’s not to love? And since this month also happens to be the end of the year (haha, uh, what?!), our current goal is to eat really good food that is really not complicated to make.
One of the things that we love about this recipe is that, while it does have a nice kick, it’s not melt-your-face-off spicy. There’s a more subtle spice to these noodles, perfectly balanced out by the Kimchi flavor and shredded seaweed topping.
Also, when you’re putting together your own bowl of these ramen noodles, you have absolute and total control over the heat level. Even if you typically shy away from spicy foods, you’ll want to give this one a shot- you might be pleasantly surprised! This recipe calls for one tablespoon of Gochujang sauce, but if you’re feeling more adventurous (or you’re a serious thrill seeker; go you) add a little more.
Here’s What You’ll Need to Make Korean Fire Noodles:
- 1 Mike’s Mighty Good Vegetarian Kimchi Ramen Pillow Pack
- 1 tbsp gochujang sauce (more on that below)
- 1 tbsp chili oil
- 1 tbsp shredded nori seaweed
- 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
How to Make Korean Fire Noodles:
Start by opening your Vegetarian Kimchi Ramen Noodle Pillow Pack and set aside the oil and seasoning packets. While you could use any of our Instant Ramen noodle flavor for this dish, somehow, the flavor of this one just hits differently.
Cook the noodles according to the easy-to-follow instructions on the packaging. You can do this by making them on the stovetop or by using the microwave– either way will be fast and efficient! This usually takes about 3 minutes, so make sure to keep an eye on your noodles and carefully (they will be very hot!) test them to make sure they have reached desired done-ness around the 3-minute mark.
Once the noodles are done cooking, carefully drain the water out, and transfer the noodles to a large bowl. If you like lots of broth cradling your noodles, add in some of the noodle water. If you like them more dry, drain all of the water out. Next, pour in the gochujang sauce, chili oil, Vegetarian Kimchi Ramen Pillow Pack seasoning packet and oil into the bowl of noodles.
Gently mix it all together, and then sprinkle the sesame seeds and seaweed on top. (If you are unable to find white sesame seeds, you can just substitute them for black sesame seeds instead.)
Ding ding ding- dinner is done! *chef’s kiss*
What is Gochujang?
Gochujang sauce is absolutely incredible. What is it, you ask? It’s a spicy (and slightly sweet) sauce packed with so! Much! Complexity! It’s hard to remember a time when we didn’t keep hoards of extra bottles on hand.
Gochujang, a fundamental ingredient used in Korean cooking, is made from red chile pepper flakes, glutinous rice (aka sticky rice), fermented soybeans, and salt. Traditionally, this sauce is fermented over years in a pot which is kept outdoors, during which time the starches in the rice are converted to sugars- giving the sauce it’s remarkably unique sweetness.
However, since we don’t have years (or a plethora of clay pots laying around) it can also be found at your local grocery store or online, for a more simple (and quick) approach– which you know we’re all about.
Gochujang has such a uniquely strong flavor that you don’t need to use much for it to make a big impact. Start out with a teaspoon at a time to make your ramen noodles really pop.
“My new favorite ramen recipe!! I was a little skeptical of the gochujang, but wow! All of this comes together so well!” ★★★★★-Samantha
